Wikipedia Recognized as a Digital Public Good by UN-Backed Alliance

February 13, 2025 – Wikipedia has been added to the Digital Public Goods Registry, an initiative supported by the United Nations. This inclusion acknowledges the platform’s role in providing free and accessible knowledge to people around the world.

The Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) maintains the registry, listing open-source software, data, AI models, and content that serve public interests. Wikipedia’s addition underscores its impact in making reliable information available globally.

According to Liv Marte Nordhaug, CEO of the DPGA Secretariat, Wikipedia’s recognition highlights the value of open access to knowledge.

“Wikipedia exemplifies how technology can foster fair and unrestricted access to information, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals worldwide,” Nordhaug said.

As the world’s largest online encyclopedia, Wikipedia is among the most visited websites and is uniquely operated by a nonprofit. It relies on nearly 260,000 volunteers who create and verify content in over 300 languages.

Rebecca MacKinnon, Vice President of Global Advocacy at the Wikimedia Foundation, emphasized the importance of collaboration in maintaining digital public goods.

“The Wikimedia Foundation works with affiliates and volunteers to advocate for policies that protect Wikipedia and similar initiatives. We look forward to working with the DPGA and other stakeholders to create a more accessible and inclusive internet,” MacKinnon said.

In 2024, Wikipedia volunteers and Wikimedia Foundation staff participated in the UN General Assembly’s Summit for the Future, contributing to discussions on the governance of digital technology and artificial intelligence.

Earlier in the year, the Wikimedia Foundation and affiliates issued an open letter urging UN Member States to:

  • Support communities that manage online public interest projects.
  • Strengthen digital commons by promoting and protecting digital public goods.
  • Ensure AI and machine learning enhance human-driven content creation rather than replace it.

Wikipedia’s inclusion in the Digital Public Goods Registry strengthens these advocacy efforts and highlights its role in shaping a more community-driven internet. The Wikimedia Foundation continues to work with international organizations, governments, and civil society groups to ensure digital public goods remain protected, accessible, and widely supported.
